So, I’ve heard so many people (me inclusive) say Cameroonian contemporary music needs an overhaul. I was surprised and quite frankly, a bit embarrassed to discover Jovi via a non-Cameroonian blog.
Born Ndukong Godlove Nfor (Grasslands Oyé!), Jovi is a university graduate turned passionate Hip-Hop artist, signed to one of Cameroon’s fastest rising record labels, MuMaK. His use of pidgin English alongside ‘grammar’ and some French thrown in here and there makes for some intriguing listening. I have to say I didn’t feel the message like I did the beat, but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for his debut album “H.I.V.” (which stands for “Humanity Is Vanishing”) expected to drop in July.
